So, whenever somebody will search your site’s address on their computers your server will make your website available for them. These web hosting service providers keep the server up as they have all the associated services that are needed to host websites.

Types of Web Hosting

Different types of web hosting have been introduced with the progression of technology. You need to know all about their characteristics and how they work to decide which one meets the different needs of your website. The four main categories of web hosting that I will be explaining in this article are:

  • Shared Web Hosting
  • Dedicated Hosting
  • VPS Hosting
  • Cloud

Let’s start!

Shared Web Hosting

In shared hosting, you share a server with thousands of other websites. It is the most common web hosting type as most of the people refer to it as web hosting. Most of the web host companies provide shared hosting as it is cheap for a personal website or small businesses. All the websites that are sharing the same server share its resources like memory computing, Drive space, and RAM.

It is easy to set up and excellent for launching small websites which do not have huge traffic. Besides the easy setup, you do not have to worry about the server going down as your hosts specialize in keeping servers running 24/7.

Shared hosting is similar to renting a room with other roommates. You do not have to pay a huge amount as you are sharing it with others and they will pay their rent as well.

However, shared hosting can be the best option for the new website operators and small business owners, its not suitable for large websites with lots of traffic. High traffic can impact your site’s loading time and it will lead to a bad ranking of your site. Because multiple sites are sharing the same server the behaviors of others may affect your website as well. It is easy to use but is less flexible as you do not have much control over it.

  • Low cost
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Pre-configured server
  • User-friendly control panel
  • Constant monitoring by the host

  • Little or no control over server configuration
  • Bad neighbor effect
  • Low-end value

Dedicated Hosting

In dedicated hosting, an entire server is dedicated to a single website. You have the full resources of it working completely for your site. Since Dedicated hosting is solely dedicated to your site, you can have incredible flexibility like having full control of your hosting environment. You are allowed to select an operating system and software according to your choice. Dedicated hosting suitable for websites with huge traffic (more than 100,000 visitors per month) that need extensive storage and RAM that requires a server dedicated to them.

However, dedicated hosting can be a little expensive, you get to pay about $80 to 2000 per month but. If are expecting a ton of traffic on your website and need your own server, it’s better to choose dedicated hosting.

  • Full control over server configuration
  • High reliability
  • Root access to your server
  • High security

  • High cost
  • Technical and server management knowledge is a must

VPS Hosting

In VPS (virtual private server) your host provide you a separate space even though you are still sharing the same server with other users. It is also known as a virtual dedicated server. VPS hosting is considered as a step between shared and dedicated hosting as each website is sharing the same server but have their own virtual server. You can have full access to customize your website in VPS which you don’t have in shared hosting.

Since you have a dedicated style hosting, you can have the computing power and memory space reserved for you, with a cost of $15 to $50 per month. The traffic surges on other websites can not affect your website.  The loading time of your website will be much faster as fewer websites are sharing the main server. Its great option for websites with small business and organizations.

However, if you have a website with high traffic, VPS hosting can be limiting as compared to dedicated hosting.

  • Dedicated server space
  • Traffic level on other websites have no effect on your website
  • Root access to the server
  • Easy scalability
  • High customizability

  • More expensive than shared hosting
  • Technical and server management knowledge is a must

Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting is considered as the most popular and reliable solution right now. You are provided a cluster of servers by the host in cloud hosting. these servers supply an affordable and scalable web infrastructure. The data of your site are replicated on each server. As you have multiple servers working for your website to host, a high level of traffic will have no impact on your website’s performance. If one server is busy, the traffic will be routed to another server in the cluster automatically.

You can have reliable bandwidth and extensive disk space for multiple domains. If you are planning to have a large business, cloud hosting can be a great choice as it is an effective way to run a website with a large number of contents and resources like intensive application and images.

However, you cannot have the full control over cloud server hosting, you are not allowed to change any of the server settings and it is also an expensive hosting.

  • Little to no downtime
  • Server failures have no effect on your site
  • Allocates resources on demand
  • Pay as you go pricing (you only pay for what you use)
  • More scalable than a VPS

  • Hard to estimate the costs
  • Root access is not always provided

So, now that we have discussed the main four web hosting types in details, I hope you got a clear view of which web hosting will be best for your website.
